Born in 1943, he starts his martial arts life in 1960 in the Shung-do-Kwan (SDK) dojo of Geneva where he mainly practises Judo and Kendo. In the sixties, he is the leader of the SDK Judo team, and also discovers zen philosophy. He decides to visit Japan in 1968 (40 days travel by boat) and is the first from the SDK and one of the first Swiss citizen to learn Judo in Japan. In 1970, he is also the Swiss representative for the creation of the International Kendo Federation in Tokyo. He also practises Sumi-e, Japanese ink painting, and will visit twice a zen temple near Nara, to discover the reality of the seated meditation. He starts to learn Kyudo at the Shinjuku Taikukan in 1969. In 1970, he gets his first dan and meets Michel Martin who was just passing his second dan. With his japanese wife, he stays about a year in Australia, then comes back in Switzerland in 1971. He practises Kyudo alone in the SDK dojo in Geneva, with a first public demonstration for the 25th aniversary of the SDK. In 1972, he meets Philippe Reymond who was practising Kyudo in Lausanne. The Swiss Kyudo adventure starts there, with the creation of the Swiss Kyudo Association. Then he also participates to the creation of the European Kyudo Federation. He get its 2nd dan in Japan, while being taught by Onuma Sensei, then its 3rd dan in the Netherland in 1985, its 4th dan in Japan with Hama Sensei, and its 5th dan in Japan (Miyakonojo 1992). While jogging with his dog in Plan-les-Ouates where he was living, he dicovers in 1992 an unused field near the Roch farm. He then asks and gets the autorization from the Plan-les-Ouates autorities to create there his first dojo. The dream becomes reality with efforts of motivated people to build the Mei Kyu Kan dojo, hosting the Kyudo Kai of Plan-les-Ouates. Mei (Moon and sun symbols) means luminous, or enlightment through the Kyudo practise. "Mei" is part of the name for dojos belonging to Onuma Sensei tradition and transmission. Onuma Sensei photo is on the kamiza side of the dojo. After his participation to the creation of the Swiss, then European Kyudo Federation, having been Swiss Federation President, he leads he Kyudo Kai of Plan-les-Ouates / Geneva and participates to various seminars to keep learning, get his renshi grade and continue on the way of the bow. |
